:: first foods ::

I'm compiling the list of what will be Liam's first foods.  I'm taking a completely different approach with this - my last baby.  With The Others, it was rice cereal (white rice), bananas, and sweet potatoes.  From a jar/box.  This time around?  I'm feeling a little more...responsible.  I just read an article about changing America's first food - white rice vs. brown rice.  It talks about how many minerals/nutrients are stripped out of rice in order to process the white rice that feeds so many first-time eaters, but the line that really got me (and I quote) is this:

"In America we have raised a generation where most children learn to get zero servings of whole grains daily by the time they are 18 to 24 months old."

I am out to change that with my kids.  In recent months, we have switched from white pasta to whole grain pasta.  Most white rice to whole grain brown rice.  All breads to whole grain, etc.  And you know what?  It's GOOD.  It tastes good and feels even better knowing it is better for our bodies.  So.  Here is my rough draft list.  All I need now is a food processor (I still can't believe I don't have one of these) and some energy.

1. brown rice (duh)
2. fresh avocado
3. sweet potatoes (because my other two loved them so much)

Anyway, here's to trying to make things a bit healthier for the loves in my life.  We're off to a good start. If you see Ryan, give him a high five or a pat on the back.  He's lost about 15 pounds and looks great!  He's really an awesome motivator to me!
