Dear Neighbor...SHUT YOUR DOG UP.

to be mailed tomorrow: maybe, with a few edits...

Dear Neighbor:

I was awoken this morning at 6AM by the most terrible, awful, annoying noise – YOUR DOG. Stopping myself from driving over to your house and ringing your doorbell, I finally got up, realizing that I was not going to get any more sleep, and came downstairs to check my email and read a little with the sliding door open for some fresh air. Again – YOUR DOG. I closed the window and my laptop. It is now 1:30PM and I am sitting here listening. Not to my music, not to my children playing, but to YOUR DOG.

Since moving into the neighborhood in the summer of 2005, my family and I have been subjected to your barking dog from early morning hours (as early as 4:30AM) and into the late night hours (midnight or 1AM). I am not sure if you are aware (I don’t know how you couldn’t be since it barks DAY AND NIGHT), but all day, every day – EVERY BLESSED DAY, your dog DOES NOT SHUT UP. I dread each nice day that I cannot sit quietly with my coffee in the early mornings with the windows open, or sleep on hot nights with the windows open, or put my children to sleep in their beds with their windows open. Your dog makes my blood pressure rise and makes me pray for rainy days that I don’t have to listen to your dog (although, rainy days don’t stop him every time). After our rainy, cold winter months, most people around here welcome spring and summer and the nice weather it brings. I fear it. I dread it. I dread your dog.

I have come to several conclusions, a few of which are:

- You are either deaf, don’t know your dog barks incessantly (impossible) or just don’t care. No one lets their dog bark like that and is okay with it. It’s a matter of being respectful to your neighbors and a decent human being.

- Your dog is miserable. You keep him tied up ALL DAY AND NIGHT on a short lead (I’ve seen it) and makes me want to make a phone call to Animal Control, which is quickly going to become an option. No dog barks that much. IT’S NOT NORMAL AND IT’S NOT OKAY!

- Fact: Something has to be done. Please, please, PLEASE. We have endured 3 summers of this. I may just lose my mind if I know I have to face another one.

For 2 years in a row, I have filed noise complaints. Unfortunately, the law makes it a difficult process for public nuisance/obsessive noise complaints. However, I am ready and prepared for what it takes to jump through the hoops. I have observed the way you “keep” your dog, tied up all day. This is inhumane. Please be a responsible dog owner and either build a dog run for him or put him inside. Be nice to your dog. We would like to begin to enjoy our backyard and our nice weather for once. I would like my kids to be able to sleep without fans in their rooms on nice days.

My next step will be canvassing the neighborhood for support. I can’t be the only one who is continually disturbed by this.

We Need Some Peace!

Sincerely,

Your Neighbors
